Short story
Making a difference.
There was an old man who used to go to the seaside every morning for his walk. One morning he found the beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions.
In the distance, the old man noticed a little girl approaching. As the girl walked, she paused ever so often. When she came closer, the old man could see that she was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea.
As the little girl came closer, the old man asked, “Little princess, what is it that you are doing?” The little girl paused, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the sea.” She continued her job of picking and throwing the starfishes back into the sea. I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the sea?”, quizzed the old man. To this, the girl replied, “The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return back to the sea by themselves. When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water. Upon hearing this, the old man commented, ‘But, little girl, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? There must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference The girl bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she turned towards the old man, gave a sweet smile, and said, “I made a difference to that one!”
Reflection:
The little girl teaches us a very important lesson about making an effort to make a difference in someone’s life, just as she makes her life meaningful because she lives with hope and inspires others through her actions.
Thought for the day:
We might not be able to change the whole world, but sometimes we can change a small part of it. So, remember to be the change for someone and to bring the change
Let us pray-
Prayer :
Dear Lord, I’m just one person out of billions on earth. You have given me talents, gifts, and abilities to invest wisely for you. I want to use them to truly make a difference, even if that means one person at a time. Help me work together with you to help change lives. Lord, you said that someone with faith as small as a mustard seed could move mountains so help us make a difference in the world through our lives and faith in you. Amen.
Let us continue with The Lord’s Prayer
