INTRODUCTION
Mary was a first-century Jewish woman of Nazareth, the wife of Joseph, and the mother of Jesus. According to Christian theology, Mary conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit while still a virgin, and accompanied Joseph to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. Mary has been venerated since early Christianity, and is considered by millions to be the holiest and greatest saint because of her extraordinary virtues as seen at the Annunciation by the archangel Gabriel. She is said to have miraculously appeared to believers many times over the centuries. According to Christian teachings, at the end of her earthly life, God raised Mary’s body into heaven and this is known as the Assumption of Mary. 8th of September commemorates the birth day of Mary.
SCRIPTURE READING
The scripture reading has been taken from the Gospel of Luke: Chapter 1 verses 46-56.
46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
The word of the Lord. [Thanks be to God]
Since today is an auspicious day, we would like to dedicate a hymn in honour of our Dearest Mother Mary.
STORY
A few years later, Our Merciful Mother rescued a few Portuguese merchant sailors from a violent storm, which wrecked their ship. When the merchants reached the shore of Vailankanni they were taken by local fisherman to the thatched chapel. To give thanks and pay tribute to Our Lady, they built a small permanent chapel on their return trip. On subsequent visits they improved on it. The merchants dedicated the chapel to Our Lady on September 8th to celebrate the feast of her nativity and to mark the date of their safe landing to Vailankanni.
PRAYER
Let us join our hands and bow our heads in prayer.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help,
or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Let us continue by saying the Lord’s Prayer together.
Kindly stand at attention for the Pledge and the National Anthem.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
From Mary we learn to surrender to God’s will in all things. From Mary, we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone.
— St. John Paul II
Thank you and have a wonderful day.
