Good morning school. Today’s assembly will be presented by class 9 B.
Introduction:
Swachhta or cleanliness has been recognized and accorded top priority by the government of India. In order to spread awareness about cleanliness among the people, a plan to observe Swacchta Pakhwada has been launched. However, maintaining cleanliness should not be limited to cleaning our environment or our body but also our minds and souls.
So, the theme for today’s assembly is ‘Cleanliness: Outside and Within.’

Scripture Reading:
The scripture reading is taken from the book of Isaiah Chapter 1-verse 16:
Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong.
A short Story:
An old monk was about to appoint his successor and he had two young disciples as the contenders. He told them that he will appoint the one who is the purest and the cleanest, as his successor. Once, the monk and his two disciples were traveling together. At one point, they came to a river with a strong current. As they were preparing to cross the river, they saw a very young and beautiful woman also attempting to cross. The young woman asked if they could help her cross to the other side. The two disciples glanced at one another because they had taken vows not to touch a woman.
Then, without a word, one of the disciples picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on his journey. The other disciple saw this and became very happy. As monks, they were not permitted to touch a woman, how he being a disciple could carry that woman on his shoulders. He thought that now he will be chosen as the successor, as the other disciple has broken his vow and now was impure.
When they reached their destination, the old monk said, ‘I have made my decision.’ Saying this he declared the disciple who helped the woman as his successor.
The other disciple was shocked and questioned the old monk’s decision. The old monk explained that being clean or pure does not only mean maintaining purity and cleanliness of the body but also of the heart and mind. In order to maintain purity of his body, he allowed his mind to be impure of greed to win and did not come forward to help the woman. However, the other disciple helped the woman and did the right thing without thinking about the consequences of his action. The first disciple thought only about the physical purity or cleanliness while the other one gave importance to purity of the mind and soul.
We all also make the same mistake of limiting cleanliness to our outer surroundings and never pay heed to cleansing our mind and soul. While we make an attempt to clean our surroundings, we should also pay attention to clean our mind of all the evil thoughts and the heart of all the wrong emotions. Only then, we can say that we are clean and maintain cleanliness overall.
Thought for the day: Clean your space, clean your mind and soul.
Let us pray-
Dear Lord, I thank you for your love and mercy. I thank you for the privilege of being a new creation in You. Please cleanse me from all defilement, impurity, and sinfulness. Wash my mind with truth, my soul with purity, and fill me with Your Spirit. Help me to walk even as You walked, that no evil forces could ever again tempt or deceive me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN!
Let us continue by saying the Lord’s Prayer together.
